In keeping with Tarion’s mandate to regulate Ontario’s residential building industry in the public interest, the following vendor/builders were investigated and convicted of illegal building under the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. Illegal building includes failing to register and/or enrol a home with Tarion.
As a result of investigations carried out during the first quarter of 2008, the company’s enforcement team discovered 196 unenrolled homes and identified 73 unregistered builders. Total enforcement activity resulted in the collection of $105,100.00 in related registration and enrolment fees.
In the same period, the courts levied $236,340.00 in fines based on the 64 convictions as detailed in the chart below. Enforcement commenced 101 investigations and laid 143 charges in the first quarter of 2008.
