Tarion Recognized for Breaking Down Walls with its Virtual APM

csrbadgeTORONTO – Tarion has been recognized by PR Daily's 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Awards for breaking down accessibility walls with its 2016 webcast Annual Public Meeting.  The not-for-profit, consumer protection organization was awarded an Honourable Mention in the category of Organizational Transparency.

Tarion administers Ontario's new home warranty program and regulates the province's new home builders. As part of its Accountability Agreement with the provincial government, Tarion holds an Annual Public Meeting (APM) to give interested stakeholders valuable updates on the organization and the opportunity to ask management a variety of questions.

This year, in a historic first, Tarion conducted the Annual Public Meeting as a webcast-only event. The purpose was to expand the meeting's effectiveness and reach across the province and provide access to consumers well beyond the Greater Toronto Area.

"When we decided to hold a virtual Annual Public Meeting, we believed this was a good way to make our meeting more accessible to more Ontarians," says Howard Bogach, President and CEO of Tarion. "The event turned out to be a terrific success, and this Honourable Mention by PR Daily is a much-appreciated acknowledgement of our efforts to broaden our reach and break down walls."

Tarion held its first Annual Public Meeting in 2009.  While attendance had been growing slowly, the vast majority of participants were always from the Greater Toronto Area. Only a few stakeholders, usually new home owners, from outside the city were able to attend.  Some having to travel for many hours.

Tarion's first-ever webcast APM, held on May 31, 2016, was an unqualified success. More than 1,600 people from across the province registered for the event: from Thunder Bay to Timmins; Sarnia to Niagara Falls; Kington to Ottawa; and dozens of towns and cities in between.

The organization received more than 275 pre-event question submissions from homeowners about the warranty and our processes.  Tarion staff followed up with over 200 homeowners directly and more than 30 questions were answered during the webcast.

The webcast was also recorded and then posted to Tarion's YouTube channel.  Since then the recording has been viewed more than 650 times.
