Protect your deposit

If you’ve just purchased a new home, sign up with Tarion to protect your deposit. It’s easy, secure and takes just one easy step.

For easy instructions on how to sign up, download our flyer: How to register your purchase agreement with Tarion (PDF)

Information you'll need:

  • Contact information for the purchasers of the home
  • Your deposit amount
  • Home ID  (found on the Warranty Information Sheet attached to your purchase agreement)

Note:  If you do not have a Home ID number, you can still sign up for deposit protection but you will need extra information  - the vendor's name and your home address/legal description of the property.

*When you sign up with Tarion, your deposit is protected up to a certain limit. If you do not receive your home because the builder goes bankrupt, doesn’t fulfill the purchase agreement or you are legally allowed to terminate the agreement, you can submit a deposit refund claim to Tarion.

Why sign up for deposit protection with Tarion

Signing up benefits you in several ways:

  • Creates a record of the purchase with Tarion;
  • Notifies Tarion that you wish to participate in the deposit protection program;
  • Allows Tarion to provide you with key information on the builder’s warranty on your new home; and
  • Allows Tarion to ensure the builder is acting legally and take steps to protect you and others if they are not.

Beginning April 1, 2026 homeowners must sign up for deposit protection within 45 days of signing their agreement.

For further information see our deposit coverage information page and deposit coverage FAQs

To allow time for consumers to be aware of the changes, Tarion is implementing a transition period and will defer the changes to deposit coverage until January 1, 2027.

What happens next?

Once you have completed your sign-up, you will receive a welcome email from Tarion that includes, a link to the Ready, Set, Home resource hub (which includes information about the warranty, home ownership and helpful tips) and how to reach out to Tarion if you have an issue.

Getting this information when you sign your agreement gives you the opportunity to learn about your new home warranty before you get the keys to your new home. A home is one of life’s biggest purchases – it’s important to protect your investment and Tarion is here to help!
